Medals created for an Age of Empires II tournament

Medals created for an Age of Empires II tournament
These medals were designed for the Red Bull Wololo II tournament, dedicated to the video game Age of Empires II. To ground these awards in the game’s medieval universe, we drew inspiration from ceremonial jewelry and artifacts of the era, prioritizing a design rich in details and historical references.
Techniques used
Through their translucent colors and light interplay, the stained-glass elements evoke a medieval aesthetic while giving the medals a precious, luminous quality.
The choice to incorporate stained glass around the logo reinforces this inspiration. Its varying translucency and rich hues directly evoke the architecture of medieval monuments, while giving the medals a precious, luminous quality.
To design the frame and ornaments surrounding the logo, we reinterpreted foliage scrollwork—decorative motifs composed of botanical arabesques, leaves, and flowers. Acanthus leaves and irises form the core of this decoration. Present in art since Antiquity, the acanthus echoes the mythological and historical references of this universe, while the iris evokes royalty, a prominent theme in the game’s medieval lore.
Beyond their ornamental detail, these medals also seek to convey the warlike spirit of Age of Empires II. Their solid, cold metallic structure calls to mind medieval weapons and gear, particularly polearms and other armor pieces that shape the visual identity of the era.
Finally, the black patina completes this aesthetic, giving the medals the look of genuine relics. As if they had weathered centuries, it lends them an almost archaeological presence, reinforcing the illusion of an ancient artifact straight out of the game.
