When terror takes shape in a trophy

This trophy was specially created for the international BLAST R6 Manchester Major Esports tournament, held in Manchester, England, in May 2024. Centred around the tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege, the event was organised by BLAST in partnership with Ubisoft.

A visual allegory that transforms Deimos’s innards into a cascade of ammunition.

For this event, we were commissioned to design the trophy as a bust, following the tradition of featuring Operators represented in previous tournaments. Deimos, an iconic character from Rainbow Six, was chosen as the focus of this edition.

In the game, Gerald Morris, known as “Deimos”, is an attacking Operator and former member of Rainbow. He has since become an international terrorist.

In Ancient Greek, Δεῖμος / Deîmos means “terror”. In Greek mythology, Deimos is also one of the sons of Ares, god of war, and embodies terror and dread.

The idea was to use his representation to emphasise the terrifying nature of the character.

Deimos’s dark side is already conveyed through the physical and clothing choices made in his character design. Dressed in black and wearing his death mask, he embodies desolation.

For this occasion, the BLAST and Ubisoft teams had already chosen to portray him revealing his own entrails, further expressing and amplifying the character’s destructive and terrifying nature. The depiction suggests a figure seemingly unaffected by pain, reinforcing his relentless and menacing persona.

Given the freedom to explore the way Deimos would be represented, we chose to introduce an additional surreal and symbolic dimension through a visual allegory, adding greater depth to the trophy’s interpretation.

Amidst this cracked and broken body, what emerges is not a mass of entrails, but a cascade of ammunition spilling down onto the base.

By replacing the character’s entrails with bullets, this visual association symbolically exposes and intensifies his warlike and murderous nature, portraying him as both a symbol and an advocate of terror.
